What exactly is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting techniques. The principles of BJJ allow smaller, weaker people to use their skill to successfully defend themselves against bigger, stronger adversaries by using leverage and proper technique. It is known as the ‘gentle art’ as proper execution of the techniques allow smaller people to force bigger opponents into a submission.
What are the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training?
Learning BJJ techniques:
- improves your physical fitness
- boosts your concentration
- provides a healthy way to release stress, and
- builds self-confidence.
BJJ techniques are also useful self-defence skills to have.
As a sport, BJJ attracts MMA competitors who include it in their training to make them better all-round competitors in competitions.
Judokas find our Jiu Jitsu training really helps them improve their NE WAZA (on the ground) judo skills and for more experienced Judokas, Jiu Jitsu allows them to continue training without being thrown.
Will I be fit enough to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
All you need is an open mind and enthusiasm to learn. Our fundamentals programme starts right at the beginning.
Do I need the uniform for my first time?
We have classes in both Gi (wear a uniform) and No-Gi. You can rent a GI for a free trial class and if you get hooked like I did we have a new member package for €180 which includes six weeks’ unlimited classes and a Gi. No GI classes require a rash guard, spats/leggings and shorts if desired.
